What is SATERN? March 3, 2009
As a ham, I’ll bet you have heard
of ARES and the affiliation of Amateur Radio with the Red Cross
but have you heard of SATERN? The
SALVATION
ARMY
TEAM
EMERGENCY
RADIO
NETWORK
is a network of hams whose
objective is to provide communications in support of Salvation
Army emergency relief operations. The Salvation Army and SATERN
is currently involved in providing services to residents of
North Dakota affected by flooding of the Red River. SATERN has
been operating in the United States since June 1988 but has only
recently had a presence in Canada.
Major Rick
Shirran is
The
Salvation Army’s Canadian Territorial Emergency Disaster
Services Director and Territorial SATERN Director. In the past
months Rick has expanded the SATERN organization in Canada and
specifically Ontario to include:

While similar in purpose to ARES, SATERN is distinct as are the
emergency services provided by the Red Cross through ARES and
the Salvation Army through SATERN. You can obtain more
information on the SATERN program in the United States by
visiting the URL
http://www.satern.org/. Should you wish to apply for SATERN
membership,
or on the "Application" button at the left side of this page.

Many of the BARC
Executive either have or about to submit SATERN applications and
we encourage you to do so whether or not you are active on HF
bands. We will shortly be submitting a BARC Club application.
Take a look and see what it is all about.
