Operating Guidelines

The IRLP interface for VE3RSB has recently undergone a software upgrade which includes the coding to allow users to select an IRLP contact or an EchoLink contact via the VHF repeater, VE3RSB; 147.210 MHz.

To better understand the principles and infrastructure of EchoLink, visit: www.echolink.org

ECHOLINK Repeater Access Quick Menu

Making a Call Using the DTMF keypad on your radio, dial ' * ' + the node number being called
Ending a Call Using the DTMF keypad, dial ' 73 '

Visitors and Guests

All Licenced Amateurs are welcome to use the Burlington Node. Club members are encouraged to assist properly identified visitors with the operation of the node.
No system access codes are required.

Using ECHOLINK - Making a Call- From VE3RSB

To initiate a call by radio, follow the same procedures as IRLP in announcing your callsign. Press the star (*) key on your microphone then the 4, 5 or 6 digit code for the node you wish to contact. A list of links is available at http://www.echolink.org/links.jsp. When you have completed your call, disconnect by pressing 73 (the star is not needed to disconnect).

IRLP nodes are called up as they are now, no star or other code is required, just the 4 digit node number.

The ' * ' tone activates the Echolink software interface associated with the VE3RSB VHF repeater.

While travelling or at home, via computer:

Before leaving, download and install the Echolink software on your computer. It is free and can be downloaded from http://www.echolink.org/ . (You must install the software before attempting to validate.)

During the installation process, you will be required to enter your callsign and location (Burlington/Hamilton, etc.). You must then validate your callsign.   Go to http://www.echolink.org/validation/ and enter your callsign.

Validation Confirmation: To complete the validation you must submit by e-mail or fax a copy of your Industry Canada license.  Once you have sent this information your account will be validated within 24 hours. The registration process is easy and quick and ensures that only properly accredited amateur radio operators can access the system and get out on the air.

The only hardware you will require is a microphone and speakers or headset that can be connected to your computer soundcard. These can be purchased inexpensively at some of the surplus stores.

After validation has been received, when you connect to the internet and run the Echolink software you will see a list of active nodes. Find VE3RSB in the list; double-click the VE3RSB hyperlink. You will then be connected to the VE3RSB repeater. The space bar is used to toggle between Receive and Transmit modes.

When connected to other computer workstation nodes, text messages can be sent simultaneously with voice.

Local Interference

If the repeater is receiving moderate or excessive interference from skip, co-channel or inter-modulation sources, do not make ECHOLINK connections to remote nodes, particularly the reflectors. The interference will capture the internet connection and continue to transmit the interference until it discontinues. During periods of local interference, the node may be disabled by the Administrator.

ECHOLINK Misuse

The ECHOLINK will be disabled on those occasions when the ECHOLINK interface connection is being misused.
